We are absolutely BUZZING to announce that this month’s BOTM is the unreal Pip Millett!
We’ve been huge supporters of Pip’s for a while now and were lucky enough to catch her at The Great Escape in Brighton last month. We recently caught up with Pip for a cheeky zoom date and its safe to say we definitely were not disappointed.

Hey Pip! Thanks so much for joining us ❤️ Let’s dive right in…
Please describe your sound in five words to our lovely readers:
Chilled, emotional, honest, dream-like, patterns.
Nice! You recently released your powerfully emotive new single ‘Downright’ – can you tell us what it’s all about?
‘Downright’ I’d basically written about depression and for me personally it was the story of being friends with someone who was also depressed and how that can sometimes be quite difficult for both of you to get out of that depressive state and into a good state. Trying to leave it behind but you’re not trying to leave the person behind. Basically its about trying your best to move forward but understanding that people still need you when you’re down.
I feel you. The single also comes with a poignant KC LOCKE directed music video – how did that come about?
Before I had any videos, KC reached out to me after I’d released a couple of singles and was saying if I ever needed a video, basically to get in touch haha! That was a really long time ago, before I’d released my first EP or anything so its been a long relationship I guess, its a good one.
For sure! What advice would you give to anyone who is struggling with their mental health?
My advice would be to focus on healing, focus on yourself. It’s easy to take on a selfish mindset but kind of in the wrong way? It’s easy to distract yourself with different things, but when you take the time to look at that sadness and figure out how you can help yourself or who you can ask for help even. Asking for help is such an important thing and feeling like you don’t have to do it alone because you definitely DO NOT have to do it alone and it’s very tricky to do that, but reaching out to a doctor or a therapist, a friend or family is incredibly important and can be life changing.
What’s your songwriting process like?
It varies I would say. All the songs are written in different ways a lot of the time. I’d say sadder, more emotional songs are usually written on my own on my guitar first and then take it to a producer. Often the more upbeat stuff is done in a session, like more of a collaboration.
Do you have a favourite producer you’ve worked with?
I don’t think I have a favourite haha, I feel bad choosing one. I’ve loved working with Josh Crocker, Lester Salmins, Eg White, Fred Cox, Owen Cutts. I love them all to be honest. The ones I go back to and actually release music from, they’re the ones I like the most 100%.
You also released your mesmerising EP ‘Motion Sick’ last year and we were pretty obsessed but we must know… what makes you motion sick?
Oh god haha, any kind of change! Even though I’m trying to be more accepting of it, even good change… I remember moving house and I knew it was a great thing to be doing but it truly just terrified me. Sometimes I’m quite weird, I remember getting a sofa when I’d not had sofa in the lounge for months and then I got the sofa and was like ‘no, wait, I don’t like it’ haha! It’s ridiculous. The tiniest change. I actually had somewhere to sit but I was like ‘no I’m not ready, this is too much’ hahaha.
I know EXACTLY what you mean. Who would you say are your biggest influences?
I guess my friends and family are probably my biggest influences, sometime a bad influence haha, but generally the people I’m around. I try my best to have people around me are a good influence and that I look up to in some way.
Yess its all about having that safe space. If you could collaborate with any artist – dead or alive – who would it be?
Nas, James Blake and Otis Redding.
Oh luuuuush. Any of them would be incredible. What advice would you give artists starting out in the music industry?
Don’t be afraid to let other people help. Don’t be too stubborn with your sound or the way you’re writing. I think that can be you can almost stop yourself from growing if you don’t let other people in. I say this as someone who is incredibly stubborn haha, but I think as a new artist its always good to let people help in some way. Or if you’re not comfortable with that, make sure you’re reading lots of poetry and listening to lots of music and picking up on the bits that you do like about that. I think finding a good sound and one that’s not a copy of someone else’s, is one of the most important things.
Absolutely, keep it authentic. Are there any Manchester-based emerging artists you’d recommend?
The KTNA are still emerging artists maybe? I’m not sure if I can call them that anymore but I love them.
What are your plans for the rest of 2022? Any plans of album release in the works? Hint, hint…
Haha maaaaaybe, there might be! I know there’s lots of shows, I’ve just announced a new tour. I’m tired looking at my calendar that’s what I do know haha! But yeah, there’s lots to come, I think this is my busiest year yet.
Exciting! Any final pearls of wisdom?
I’d probably say that forgiveness is the key to happiness. Letting go!
Haha wise words indeed, thanks so much Pip! Xxx
